The White Wagtail is an elegant, slender bird recognized by its striking black, white, and grey plumage and its characteristic, almost constant tail-wagging motion. It is one of the most widespread passerine species globally.
Where to spot
Widespread across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa. Commonly found in open habitats near water, such as farmlands, riverbanks, urban areas, parks, and coastal environments.
How to spot
Easily identified by its pied plumage, long tail, and distinctive tail-wagging motion. Look for it walking briskly on the ground, often near water, snatching insects. Its call is a sharp, often repeated 'chissick' or 'tsweep'.
When to spot
Observable year-round in many parts of its range where it is resident. Migratory populations are best seen during spring and autumn migration, as well as throughout winter in their non-breeding grounds.
