Frequently asked questions

How are the points calculated?

A bird is worth points. The points range from 5 to 100. The number of points a bird is worth depends, among other things, on its rarity in your region. A region can consist of several countries or even an entire continent.

The first time you spot a bird earns you the most points. Repeated sightings gradually decrease your points. At the start of a new month, you can earn full points for a bird again. An example for a bird worth 50 points:

  • First time of the month: 50
  • Second time: 25
  • Third time: 13
  • Fourth time: 6
  • Subsequent times: 3

If you only hear one bird, you always receive the last score; in this example, for a bird with 50 points, that's 3.

You receive bonus points for spotting the bird of the week, your first of a species (a lifer), or for earning badges. You can also earn extra points with your results in the quiz!

Is Fladder free to use?

Yes! Everyone can use Fladder for free. Some extra features are paid, so we can continue developing the app and keep it up and running. But you can also participate without a subscription. And we'd like to keep it that way.

What is the mission of Fladder?
  • Strengthening connections by sharing observations.
  • Promoting education by teaching users about birds and their habitats in an accessible and playful way. It's proven that play activates and accelerates learning.
  • Promoting health, both physically through walking and being outdoors, and mentally through relaxation and experiencing nature.
  • And lots of birding fun :)
I don't know which bird I saw... what now?

Fladder offers a wide range of tools to help you find the right bird:

  • Search the extensive bird list and use the filters to find a bird.
  • Enter a description of the bird and see the suggestions.
  • Let Fladder listen in; see which birds you hear at that moment.
  • Do you have a photo? Upload it to our photo recognizer!

Still not sure? Ask the community. Together we can figure it out!

What are badges?

Badges are like medals. You can earn them for your observations. For example, there's a badge for spotting rare birds, which you receive when you spot birds worth 70 points or more. Badges are divided into different levels:

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond

Each level has a specific requirement, which becomes increasingly difficult.
