The Rock Pipit is a robust, dark-plumaged pipit strongly associated with rocky coastlines and maritime environments. Its plumage is typically drab olive-brown with subtle streaking, providing excellent camouflage in its preferred habitat.
Where to spot
Primarily found along the rocky coasts of Western Europe, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the Atlantic coast of France. Some northern populations move south along coasts for winter.
How to spot
Look for its dark, dull plumage and sturdy build on rocky shores, sea walls, or jetties. Its call is a distinctive, rather harsh 'tseep' or 'chist'. Observe it foraging amongst seaweed and rocks for marine invertebrates.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its coastal breeding range. Northern populations may undertake short-distance migrations south for winter. Best observed at low tide when they forage actively on exposed rocks and seaweed.

Unlike most other pipit species that favor open fields or woodlands, the Rock Pipit is almost exclusively found in coastal habitats, often foraging in the intertidal zone among seaweed and rocks.
