Spotted

The Great Crested Grebe is a large, elegant waterbird renowned for its elaborate head plumes, reddish-brown ruff, and spectacular courtship displays. It is a common sight on larger freshwater bodies.

Where to spot

Widespread across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia. Found on large freshwater lakes, reservoirs, gravel pits, and slow-moving rivers, particularly those with open water and fringing vegetation.

How to spot

Its large size, long neck, and striking head plumes (dark crest and rufous-brown cheek ruffs) in breeding plumage make it unmistakable. Look for its elegant profile and frequent dives. Listen for its barking 'krekk-krekk' calls and trilling sounds.

When to spot

Resident year-round in many milder climates, with northern populations migrating to coasts or larger unfrozen waters. Most active and visible during the breeding season (spring to summer), when courtship displays are common.

The 'Discovery Dance' of the Great Crested Grebe is one of the most complex and beautiful courtship rituals in the bird world, involving synchronized head-shaking, diving, and presenting each other with water plants.
