The Puna Grebe is a medium-sized grebe endemic to the high-altitude Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. It is characterized by its dark upperparts, reddish neck, and a distinctive bright yellow patch at the base of its bill. This species is adapted to the harsh conditions of high-altitude saline lakes.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Inhabits high-altitude saline and alkaline lakes (altiplanos) between 3,000m and 4,500m elevation.
How to spot
Look for its dark upperparts, reddish neck and chest, and the prominent bright yellow spot at the base of its bill. Distinguish from similar grebes by this unique bill marking. Access to its habitat can be challenging, requiring travel to high elevations. Observe from a distance to avoid disturbance.
When to spot
