The Great Grebe is the largest grebe species in the world, found in South America. It is an impressive aquatic bird with a long, slender neck, dark upperparts, and white underparts. This elegant bird is a powerful swimmer and diver, preferring large open water bodies.
Where to spot
Widespread across South America, from Peru and Brazil south to Tierra del Fuego. Inhabits large freshwater lakes, estuaries, and calm coastal bays.
How to spot
Look for its very large size, long, slender neck, dark brown-black upperparts, and pure white underparts. Observe its graceful swimming and powerful diving. Listen for its loud, far-carrying trumpeting calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in most of its range. Breeding occurs during the austral spring and summer (September-February). Best observed during daylight hours on large, open water bodies.
