The Horned Grebe (also known as Slavonian Grebe) is a small to medium-sized grebe best known for its vibrant breeding plumage with golden 'horns' of feathers behind its eyes and a chestnut neck.
Where to spot
Breeds across northern parts of Europe, Asia, and North America, migrating to coastal areas for winter. Found on small freshwater ponds and lakes with emergent vegetation during breeding, and coastal waters, estuaries, and large lakes in winter.
How to spot
In breeding plumage, look for the golden-buff ear tufts ('horns'), chestnut neck, and black head. In winter, they are much plainer, mostly black and white with a clear line between the dark cap and white cheek. Look for its short bill and frequent diving. Listen for a rapid, trilling call.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (late spring to summer) on inland waters, when their bright plumage is most visible. In winter (autumn to spring), they are seen on larger open waters.

Horned Grebes build floating nests anchored to emergent vegetation. They carefully construct these nests from decaying plant material, often adding a ramp for easy access from the water.
