Spotted

The Red Kite is a large, graceful raptor instantly recognizable by its long, angular wings and a deeply forked, rusty-red tail. Its soaring flight makes it one of the most distinctive birds of prey.

Where to spot

Found in open woodlands, farmland, river valleys, and sometimes urban fringes across Europe, with strong populations in the UK, Spain, France, and Germany.

How to spot

Easily identified by its reddish-brown plumage, long angular wings, and distinctive deep rufous, strongly forked tail, which it constantly twists as it soars. Look for its graceful, buoyant flight.

When to spot

Year-round in most resident populations, but they are most active and conspicuous during the breeding season (spring/summer) when performing aerial displays.

Red Kites are primarily scavengers, often seen circling high overhead looking for carrion. They have made a remarkable comeback in many parts of Europe thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
