Where to spot
Central and East Asia, including parts of Russia, Mongolia, China, and Tibet. Found in high-altitude steppes, plateaus, and mountainous regions.
How to spot
Look for its large size, broad wings, and a distinctive white base to the primaries (when seen from below). Plumage is variable, but often pale on the underparts with dark streaking or a dark belly band. Its call is a harsh, cat-like mewing.
When to spot
Year-round resident in much of its range, with some populations moving to lower altitudes or more southerly areas in winter. Active during the day.
