The Mallard is arguably the most recognizable and widespread duck species in the world. Males have a distinctive iridescent green head, a white neck ring, a brown breast, and grey body plumage. Females are mottled brown with an orange bill. They are highly adaptable and found in almost any type of wetland habitat.
Where to spot
Found globally across the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, Asia, and parts of Australia, New Zealand, and South America (introduced populations). Inhabits almost any freshwater or brackish wetland, including urban parks, rivers, lakes, and marshes.
How to spot
Males are easily identifiable by their bright green head and yellow bill. Females are mottled brown with a characteristic orange bill with a black saddle. Both sexes have an iridescent blue speculum (wing patch) visible in flight. They are dabbling ducks, often seen tipping up to feed in shallow water.
When to spot
Visible year-round across most of its extensive range, as many populations are resident. Migratory populations are best observed during spring and autumn migrations.
