Spotted
The Crested Duck (*Lophonetta specularioides*) is a striking South American waterfowl known for its distinctive shaggy crest and beautiful iridescent green speculum (wing patch). It is found in high-altitude wetlands and coastal regions.
Where to spot
Found in Southern South America, primarily in the Andes Mountains of Chile and Argentina, extending south to Tierra del Fuego, and also along the Patagonian coast. It inhabits high-altitude lakes, lagoons, and coastal estuaries.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey-brown body, often with fine barring, and the characteristic shaggy crest on its head. In flight or when the wings are visible, look for the iridescent green speculum. They are often found in pairs or small groups, dabbling in shallow water or grazing on shores.
When to spot
Observable year-round, though populations in the higher Andes may move to lower elevations or coastal areas during harsh winter conditions. Breeding occurs during the austral spring and summer.

The Crested Duck is considered an ancient lineage within the Anatidae family, not closely related to other ducks, making it quite unique evolutionarily.
