Spotted
The Fuegian Steamer-Duck (*Tachyeres pteneres*) is a large, primarily flightless waterfowl endemic to the rocky coasts and islands of Tierra del Fuego and southern Patagonia. It is known for its robust build and powerful 'steaming' locomotion on water.
Where to spot
Endemic to the southernmost coasts of Chile and Argentina, including Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands (where it is non-breeding visitor). It favors rocky shores, kelp beds, and sheltered bays.
How to spot
Look for its large, heavy-bodied appearance, usually greyish plumage, and often a dull orange bill. Its most distinguishing feature is its inability to fly, even when threatened. Observe its powerful 'steaming' run across the water surface or its strong dives for food.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Breeding occurs during the austral spring and summer (October to January).

The Fuegian Steamer-Duck is the heaviest of the steamer-ducks and can use its wings to 'paddle' across the water at high speeds, creating a wake that resembles a steamboat.
