A highly recognizable medium-sized woodpecker with bold black and white plumage, a prominent red patch under the tail, and a red nape patch in males. It's a common and widespread species across Eurasia.

Where to spot

Widespread across Europe and northern Asia. Found in a wide variety of wooded habitats, including deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forests, parks, and large gardens.

How to spot

Listen for its loud, sharp 'kik' call or its distinctive, resonant drumming, often heard from high up in trees. Look for it climbing tree trunks or bracing itself on branches, actively foraging.

When to spot

Can be observed year-round in its resident range. More conspicuous in spring during breeding season when drumming is frequent.
