Spotted
The Powerful Woodpecker is a large and imposing woodpecker species, aptly named for its robust build and strong bill. It is a denizen of Andean forests, often seen methodically scaling large tree trunks.
Where to spot
Found in the Andean regions of South America, specifically in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, inhabiting humid montane forests.
How to spot
Look for its large size, predominantly black plumage with a red crest (males) and white cheek stripe. Listen for its powerful drumming and loud, piercing calls that resonate through the forest.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round in its non-migratory montane habitat. Can be more active in the mornings.
This woodpecker creates large, oval-shaped nest cavities in dead or decaying trees, which are often reused by other bird species after the woodpeckers have moved on.
