Spotted
The Scaled Piculet is a minute woodpecker, known for its distinctive scaled pattern on its head and underparts. It is a highly active and agile bird, often seen spiraling up tree trunks and branches in search of insects. Its size and cryptic colors make it challenging to spot.
Where to spot
Found in a variety of wooded habitats, including dry forests, deciduous forests, and shrublands, across northern Venezuela and eastern Colombia.
How to spot
Look for its very small size and active foraging behavior on small branches and bamboo. Listen for its soft, high-pitched 'chit' calls or gentle tapping sounds. Patience is key to spotting this diminutive bird.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most active in the early morning. Vocal activity may increase during the breeding season.

The 'scaled' pattern on its head is formed by dark feather edges, giving the appearance of overlapping scales, a subtle but distinguishing feature.
