The Greylag Goose is a large, bulky goose with a greyish-brown body, a prominent orange bill, and pink legs. It is the ancestor of most domestic geese and is widely distributed.
Where to spot
Widespread across Europe and Asia, found in a variety of wetland habitats, grasslands, and agricultural fields. Both wild and feral populations are common.
How to spot
Look for them near freshwater bodies or in open fields. Identify by its large size, plain grey-brown plumage, distinctive orange bill, and pink legs. Listen for its loud, resonant 'honk-honk-honk' call.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in many parts of its range, especially where resident populations exist. Migratory populations are best seen during autumn and spring.

The Greylag Goose has a significant place in ethology (the study of animal behavior), as it was extensively studied by Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz, who famously imprinted on goslings.
