Spotted
The Snow Goose is a medium-sized goose known for its two color morphs: a white morph with black wingtips and a dark 'blue' morph. They form vast, noisy flocks during migration.
Where to spot
Native to North America, breeding in the Arctic and sub-Arctic tundra and wintering throughout the southern United States and Mexico. Also found as a vagrant in Europe and Asia.
How to spot
Look for large flocks in agricultural fields, wetlands, and coastal areas. Identify the white morph by its pure white body and black wingtips; the blue morph is mostly grey-brown with a white head. Both have a pink bill with a black 'grinning patch'.
When to spot
Observation is excellent during autumn and spring migration (October-November and March-April) and throughout the winter months in their extensive southern wintering ranges.

Snow Geese can undergo massive population explosions, sometimes causing significant damage to their Arctic breeding grounds due to overgrazing, leading to 'eat-outs' of vegetation.
