Spotted by
The Northern Pintail is an elegant, long-necked dabbling duck named for the elongated central tail feathers of the male. Males have a chocolate-brown head, a white breast with a white stripe extending up the neck, and grey flanks. Females are mottled brown but also have a slender profile and pointed tail.
Where to spot
Breeds across northern North America, Europe, and Asia. Winters extensively in southern North America, Central and South America, Africa, and Southern Asia. Favors shallow wetlands, marshes, and agricultural fields.
How to spot
Look for the male's long, pointed tail feathers and elegant, slender neck. The white stripe on the male's neck is also a key feature. Females have a similar slender build and a pointed tail. They are dabbling ducks, often seen feeding in shallow water or resting on open water.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration periods (March-May and September-November) when they form large flocks. They are present on breeding grounds in summer and wintering grounds in winter.
