The Common Whitethroat is a widespread and familiar warbler, easily recognized by its grey head, distinctive white throat, rufous wings, and generally brownish upperparts. Where to spot
Breeds across most of Europe and into Western and Central Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Found in hedgerows, scrubland, woodland edges, heathland, and gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive scratchy song, often described as 'churr-churr-churr-wicka-wicka'. Visually, look for its white throat, grey head, and rufous patch on the wing. They are often seen singing from the top of a bush or darting between cover.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (April-July) when males are singing and performing display flights. Migrants can be seen in spring (March-April) and autumn (August-October).
