Spotted
The Subalpine Warbler (Curruca cantillans) is a small and attractive warbler, often displaying a rufous-orange breast (especially in males) and a distinctive white malar stripe that contrasts with a grey head. It has a rapid, scratchy song, and its sprightly nature makes it a lively inhabitant of Mediterranean scrublands.
Where to spot
Breeds across Southern Europe, from Iberia eastward to the Balkans and Turkey. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Inhabits dense Mediterranean scrub, garrigue, olive groves, and rocky hillsides with bushes.
How to spot
Look for its small size, rufous underparts (in males), and the prominent white malar stripe. It can be quite active and restless. Listen for its fast, rattling, and rather scratchy song, often delivered from a slightly exposed perch or within the top of a bush.
When to spot
Most easily observed during the breeding season (April-July) when males sing prominently. Migrants can be seen during spring (March-April) and autumn (August-September).

The Subalpine Warbler complex has recently undergone significant taxonomic revision, being split into several distinct species (Eastern, Western, and Moltoni's) based on plumage, vocalizations, and genetic evidence, highlighting the diversity within seemingly similar birds.
