Spotted by
The Eurasian Wren is a remarkably small, plump bird with a distinctive short, cocked tail. Despite its diminutive size, it possesses an astonishingly loud and complex song.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across Europe, Asia, and North America (where it is known simply as the Wren). It inhabits diverse environments, from woodlands and gardens to farmlands and coastal areas.
How to spot
Listen for its surprisingly powerful and intricate song, a rapid burst of trills and whistles. Look for it flitting quickly through dense undergrowth, often near water, its tail held characteristically upright.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the year. It is most vocal and conspicuous during the breeding season in spring and early summer when males sing frequently to attract mates.

During harsh winter nights, Wrens are known to communal roost, with many individuals huddling together in a single nest box or sheltered spot to conserve warmth.
