Spotted
The Flammulated Nightingale-Wren is a secretive, small wren of humid montane forests, best recognized by its rich, reddish-brown plumage and its complex, musical song.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests, typically in dense undergrowth, in the Andes from Venezuela to Peru.
How to spot
Listen carefully for its distinctive, rich, flutey song emanating from dense forest understory. It is rarely seen as it forages quietly on the forest floor or low branches.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Most vocal and detectable during the early morning and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season.
Its 'flammulated' epithet refers to the subtle flame-like or streaky markings that can sometimes be seen on its plumage, especially on the back.
