Widely distributed in humid lowland, foothill, and montane forests across Central and South America, from Costa Rica to Brazil.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, hooting or whistling calls that often have a ventriloquial quality. Look for it hopping or walking slowly on the forest floor, often near fallen logs or dense tangles.

Active year-round, with peak vocal activity during the breeding season, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.
