Spotted
The Rufous-necked Antthrush is a rather large and stocky terrestrial bird, characterized by a rufous patch on its neck and heavily barred underparts. It inhabits the understory of humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests of the northern Andes, primarily in Venezuela and Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, booming hooting song, which carries well through the forest. Patiently scan the dense, dark undergrowth and leaf litter on the forest floor, as it moves slowly and deliberately.
When to spot
Active year-round, with calls most frequent during the early morning and late afternoon.
Its deep, resonant hooting calls are distinctive and often described as sounding like an owl, a common sound in its forest habitat.
