Found in humid montane forests along the Andes, from northern Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often deep hooting calls, which can be ventriloquial. Patiently watch the forest floor and dense undergrowth, especially near ravines or steep slopes, for brief appearances.
When to spot
Active year-round, with peak vocal activity during the early morning and late afternoon.
