Spotted
The Barred Antthrush is a large, striking terrestrial bird distinguished by its heavily barred underparts and stout build. It inhabits the dense understory of humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Widespread in humid montane forests along the Andes, from Colombia and Ecuador south to Bolivia and parts of Brazil.
How to spot
Learn its deep, hooting vocalizations, which are the most reliable way to find it. Patiently scan the forest floor, especially in dense, mossy areas or near fallen logs, for glimpses as it moves stealthily.
When to spot
Active year-round, with calls most frequent during the early morning and late afternoon.

Its loud, booming calls are a classic sound of the cloud forest and are often compared to an owl's hoot, echoing through the misty canopy.
