Spotted
The Black-headed Antthrush is a large, terrestrial bird identifiable by its prominent black head and reddish-brown body. It inhabits the dense understory of humid tropical forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid lowland and foothill forests from Costa Rica through Panama to western Colombia and western Ecuador.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, distinctive whistling call, which carries well through the forest. Look for it walking slowly and deliberately on the forest floor, often in dark, shaded areas.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, with vocalizations peaking in the early morning and late afternoon. Present year-round.
It is one of the larger antthrushes, and its striking black head makes it relatively easier to identify visually compared to some of its more subtle relatives.
