The Cryptic Antthrush is a highly secretive and poorly known species, named for its elusive nature and subtle plumage. It inhabits the dense understory of lowland forests.
Where to spot
Restricted to a small region of humid lowland Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Learning its distinctive hooting calls is essential for detection. Focus on the very dense, dark undergrowth near the forest floor, where it moves stealthily and is extremely difficult to see.
When to spot
Active year-round. Its vocalizations are most prominent during the early morning and late afternoon.
