Ross's Turaco is a magnificent bird adorned in deep glossy blue-violet plumage, highlighted by a prominent bright red crest and a yellow bill. It is a true jewel of the African forests.
Where to spot
Primarily found in gallery forests, dense woodlands, and swampy forests of Central Africa, ranging from Cameroon and Central African Republic east to Uganda and Kenya.
How to spot
Look for its unmistakable red crest against its dark body in the mid to upper canopy. Listen for its deep, resonant 'kow-kow-kow' calls, often given in a series.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Most vocal and visible during the early mornings and late afternoons.
