Spotted
The Violet Turaco is an incredibly striking bird, primarily deep violet-blue with a contrasting red bill and a bright yellow cap. Its vibrant plumage makes it one of Africa's most beautiful birds.
Where to spot
Inhabits open forests, gallery forests, and woodland savannas across West Africa, from Senegal east to Nigeria.
How to spot
Look for its stunning violet plumage and yellow cap high in fruiting trees. Its loud, guttural 'kok-kok-kok' or 'gow-ay' calls are often the first clue to its presence.
When to spot
Present year-round. Most active and vocal during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon.
Despite its large size and vivid colors, the Violet Turaco is an agile climber, moving through the canopy by hopping and running along branches.
