The Great Blue Turaco is the largest member of the turaco family, instantly recognizable by its impressive size and vibrant blue-grey plumage. It is an arboreal bird of Africa's rainforests.
Where to spot
Found in the dense primary and secondary rainforests of west and central Africa, often in gallery forests along rivers.
How to spot
Look high in the forest canopy for their large, distinctive silhouettes. Listen for their deep, resonant 'coo-coo-coo' calls, which often reveal their presence before they are seen. They move clumsily through the trees, making them easier to spot than smaller forest birds.
When to spot
Active during the day, often seen in the morning and late afternoon when foraging for fruit. They are resident birds, observable year-round.

Unlike many birds, the Great Blue Turaco does not have red and green pigments in its feathers. The blue and green colors are structural, meaning they are produced by the microscopic structure of the feathers interacting with light.
