The Purple-crested Turaco is a spectacular bird known for its iridescent green body, a prominent purple crest, and bright red primary flight feathers visible in flight. It is one of the more common and widespread turacos in its range.

Where to spot

Widespread across central and southeastern Africa, inhabiting various forest types, woodlands, riverine forests, and even well-wooded suburban gardens.

How to spot

Listen for its loud, raucous 'kok-kok-kok' or 'go-away' calls. Look in the mid-to-upper canopy of tall trees, especially where fruit is abundant. They are often less shy in developed areas.

When to spot

Can be observed year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, often calling loudly at dawn and dusk.
