The Long-tailed Cormorant is a widespread small cormorant found across sub-Saharan Africa. It is often identified by its slender appearance and a distinctly longer tail than many other cormorant species, especially during the breeding season.

Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Inhabits a wide range of aquatic habitats, from freshwater lakes and rivers to coastal estuaries and lagoons.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size, entirely dark plumage (often with a glossy sheen), and noticeably long tail, particularly when flying. Its short, hooked bill is also characteristic. Often seen swimming low in the water, diving frequently, or perched with wings outstretched.

Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Active throughout the day, often fishing or perched to dry its feathers.
