Spotted
The Red-legged Cormorant is a distinctive cormorant found along the Pacific coast of South America, named for its striking red feet and legs. It has a glossy black plumage with a metallic sheen.
Where to spot
Found along the Pacific coast of South America, from northern Peru south to central Chile. Inhabits rocky coastlines and offshore islands within the Humboldt Current system.
How to spot
Look for its entirely glossy black plumage, slender build, and prominent red feet and legs. Often seen perched on rocky outcrops or fishing in the rich coastal waters. Its flight is strong and direct, low over the waves.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its coastal range. Breeding generally occurs during the spring and summer months (Southern Hemisphere).
Its vibrant red feet are particularly noticeable when it's perched, making it relatively easy to identify among other dark cormorants in its range.
