Spotted
The Antarctic Shag is a distinct population within the Imperial Shag complex, found along the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands. It is a large, black-and-white cormorant adapted to extreme polar conditions.
Where to spot
Found along the Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetland Islands, and South Orkney Islands. Breeds on rocky coasts and offshore islets in these Antarctic regions.
How to spot
Observation requires an Antarctic expedition cruise. Look for its black upperparts, white underparts, pinkish-red legs, and a prominent orange-yellow nasal knob above the bill, especially during breeding. Often seen in colonies on ice-free land or fishing near pack ice.
When to spot
Primarily observed during the austral summer (November to March) when ships can access the Antarctic Peninsula. Breeds during this period.
