Where to spot
Endemic to the Crozet Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Forages in the cold, productive waters surrounding the archipelago.
How to spot
Observation is very challenging and generally restricted to scientific expeditions to the remote Crozet Islands. Look for its dark upperparts and white underparts, and specific facial markings, which distinguish it from other Imperial Shag forms.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its very restricted range. Breeding typically occurs during the austral spring and summer.
This shag nests colonially on steep, rocky cliffs and islets around the remote Crozet Islands, often in mixed colonies with other seabirds.
