Spotted
The Crowned Cormorant is a small, dark cormorant endemic to the southwestern coast of Africa. It is named for the distinctive crest it develops during the breeding season.
Where to spot
Endemic to the coasts of Namibia and South Africa, primarily breeding on offshore islands and rocky shores with kelp beds.
How to spot
Look for its small size, entirely black plumage (with a green gloss), and during breeding, a noticeable small crest on the forehead. Often seen perched on rocks or buoys close to shore, or diving in kelp forests. Its small size helps distinguish it from other cormorants in the region.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its restricted coastal range. Breeding occurs throughout the year, with peaks during autumn and winter.

This endangered species is highly reliant on coastal kelp beds for foraging and nesting, making it particularly vulnerable to changes in marine ecosystems.
