The European Shag is a medium-sized marine cormorant characterized by its dark, glossy green plumage and a distinctive forward-curling crest during the breeding season. It is primarily found along rocky coastlines.
Where to spot
Strictly coastal, found along the rocky shores of western and northern Europe, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and parts of the Mediterranean. Seldom ventures far from the immediate coast.
How to spot
Look for its sleeker, more slender profile compared to the Great Cormorant. Its dark, oily-green sheen (especially in good light) and the distinct forehead crest in breeding plumage are key identification features. Observe it diving in rough coastal waters or perched on rocks.
