Spotted
The Spotted Shag is a graceful, medium-sized cormorant endemic to New Zealand, known for its pale underside and distinctive small black spots on its back, particularly visible during breeding. It also develops a double crest.
Where to spot
Endemic to the coastal waters of New Zealand, breeding on cliffs and offshore islands around both the North and South Islands.
How to spot
Look for its bluish-grey upperparts, white underparts, and the distinctive black spots on its back, especially when seen close. During breeding, note the double crests. Often seen fishing in sheltered coastal waters or perched on rocky outcrops.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its coastal range. Breeding season typically runs from winter to early summer, when colonies are active.

During the breeding season, the 'spotted' pattern on its back becomes very clear, and it develops two prominent crests on its head, making it highly ornamental.
