The Kerguelen Shag is a robust cormorant endemic to the Kerguelen Islands in the Southern Indian Ocean. It is a member of the Imperial Shag group, characterized by a predominantly black and white plumage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Forages in the cold, rich waters surrounding the archipelago.
How to spot
Observation is challenging and generally restricted to scientific expeditions to the remote Kerguelen Islands. Look for its black upperparts, white underparts, and the distinctive orange nasal knob and blue eye-ring during breeding.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its very restricted range. Breeding typically occurs during the austral spring and summer.
