Spotted
The Pink-footed Shearwater is a large, dark-backed shearwater with pale pink feet and bill, breeding off Chile and migrating to the North Pacific. It is an endangered species.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands off Chile (e.g., Juan Fernandez Archipelago). Migrates to the eastern North Pacific, foraging extensively off the west coast of North America.
How to spot
Identify by its large size, dark brown upperparts, whitish underparts with smudgy flanks, and diagnostic pink bill and feet. Its flight is powerful and arcing. Best observed on pelagic trips off Chile (winter) or western North America (summer).
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (November-May). Most commonly observed in the North Pacific during the northern summer (May-October).
This species nests in burrows on offshore islands and is highly vulnerable to introduced predators, leading to significant conservation efforts at its breeding colonies.
