Spotted
The Broad-billed Prion is a large prion distinguished by its unusually broad bill, specially adapted for filter-feeding on zooplankton. It is a species of the Southern Ocean.
Where to spot
Circumpolar in the Southern Ocean, breeding on islands off New Zealand (e.g., Chatham, Snares, Antipodes) and Tristan da Cunha. Disperses widely across cool temperate and sub-Antarctic waters.
How to spot
Identify by its large size for a prion, blue-grey upperparts, white underparts, and a prominent black 'W' pattern. Its extremely broad bill is diagnostic. Its flight is erratic and often low over the waves. Best observed during pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (October-May). Can be observed at sea year-round throughout its vast oceanic distribution, especially in productive areas.

Its massive bill, which is wider than its head, is a highly specialized tool for sifting krill and other small organisms from the ocean surface, much like baleen whales.
