Where to spot
Widespread in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Breeds on remote islands in various archipelagos, including the Azores, Canary Islands, Galapagos, and Japan.
How to spot
Identify by its entirely dark sooty-brown plumage, slender body, long, wedge-shaped tail, and relatively long wings. Its flight is buoyant, butterfly-like, often gliding low over the waves. Best observed on pelagic trips in suitable tropical and subtropical waters.
