The Antarctic Prion is a widespread prion of the Southern Ocean, known for its distinctive blue-grey plumage and a strong black 'M' pattern across its wings. It is a filter-feeder.
Where to spot
Circumpolar in the Southern Ocean, breeding on numerous sub-Antarctic islands including South Georgia, Heard, Kerguelen, Macquarie, and the South Orkneys. Disperses widely.
How to spot
Look for its blue-grey upperparts, white underparts, and the prominent black 'W' or 'M' pattern on its upperwing. Its bill is intermediate in size among prions. Flight is erratic and often low over the waves. Best observed during pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean, especially in krill-rich waters.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (October-April). Can be observed at sea year-round throughout its vast oceanic distribution, especially in high latitudes.
