The Spectacled Petrel is a critically endangered, large dark petrel with distinctive white 'spectacles' around its eyes. It breeds exclusively on Gough Island.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Forages in the surrounding cool temperate and subtropical South Atlantic, often seen off the coast of Brazil.
How to spot
Easily identified by its large size, all-dark sooty-brown plumage, and the striking white patches around its eyes forming 'spectacles.' Its flight is powerful and purposeful. Best observed on specialized pelagic trips to the Gough Island region or off Brazil.
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral winter (April-October). Can be observed at sea during these months off Gough Island, and during dispersal in the South Atlantic.
