Spotted
The Short-tailed Shearwater, or Slender-billed Shearwater, is a medium-sized, entirely dark shearwater renowned for its epic annual migration between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands off southern Australia and Tasmania. Migrates to the North Pacific during the austral winter, foraging extensively in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands.
How to spot
Identify by its uniformly dark sooty-brown plumage and relatively short tail. Its flight is strong and direct, with rapid wingbeats followed by long glides. Often seen in massive flocks during migration. Best observed during pelagic trips off Australia/Tasmania (breeding) or in the North Pacific/Aleutians (non-breeding).
When to spot
Breeding occurs during the austral summer (September-April). Most commonly observed in the North Pacific during the northern summer (May-October). Millions pass through coastal areas during migration.
