Spotted
A large, powerful shearwater closely related to Scopoli's, distinguished by subtle differences in bill color and flight. It's a highly pelagic migrant undertaking extensive journeys across the Atlantic Ocean.
Where to spot
Breeds primarily on islands in the North Atlantic (Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira). Spends non-breeding season (boreal winter) in the South Atlantic, off the coasts of Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa.
How to spot
Similar to Scopoli's, identify by its large size, long wings, and powerful gliding flight. Distinguish from Scopoli's by a more yellowish bill and slightly different calls, often requiring good views.
When to spot
Breeding season is from late spring to early autumn. Massive numbers can be observed during migration across the Atlantic in late summer and autumn, particularly from coastal watchpoints.

Cory's Shearwaters undertake one of the longest bird migrations annually, crossing the Atlantic from their breeding grounds to wintering grounds off the coast of South America and Africa, covering vast distances.
