The Great White Pelican is an immensely large, impressive waterbird, predominantly white, with a massive pinkish-yellow bill and a large throat pouch used for fishing. It is one of the heaviest flying birds.
Where to spot
Found in large wetlands, lakes, and coastal areas across southeastern Europe, Africa, and Asia. Often congregates in vast colonies on islands or secluded shores.
How to spot
Its immense size and distinctive white plumage, combined with the massive bill and throat pouch, make it unmistakable. Look for groups soaring gracefully on thermals or swimming and fishing cooperatively on water bodies. Its short, thick legs are also characteristic.

Great White Pelicans often engage in cooperative fishing, forming a U-shape on the water to herd fish into a concentrated area before collectively scooping them up in their enormous pouches. A single pouch can hold up to 13 liters (3.4 US gallons) of water and fish.
