Spotted
The Dalmatian Pelican is the largest of the pelican species, known for its massive size and greyish-white plumage. It prefers freshwater habitats, often forming large colonies for breeding. This majestic bird is a skilled fisher, using its large pouch to scoop up prey.
Where to spot
Look for Dalmatian Pelicans in large freshwater lakes, deltas, and coastal lagoons across Southeast Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, extending to parts of China. They favor areas with extensive reed beds for nesting.
How to spot
Observe them soaring gracefully or fishing in calm waters. Look for their distinct shaggy nape feathers, reddish-orange lower mandible and pouch (especially during breeding), and the impressive wingspan when in flight. Binoculars are essential for distant observations.
When to spot
These birds can be observed year-round in their resident breeding areas, though populations in colder regions migrate south for winter. Breeding season, usually from March to May, offers excellent opportunities to see them in colonies.

Unlike other pelicans that typically fish in groups, the Dalmatian Pelican often fishes alone. It can also catch fish by plunging its head and neck into the water, rather than just scooping.
