Spotted
A small, secretive bittern that breeds in East Asia and migrates to Southeast Asia for winter. Males have a distinct pattern of rufous, black, and white; females are browner.
Where to spot
Reedbeds, freshwater marshes, and rice paddies in East Asia (breeding) and Southeast Asia (wintering).
How to spot
Look for its small size. Males have a chestnut back and black crown, females are more streaky brown. Requires patience as it is secretive and well-camouflaged.
When to spot
Migratory, so best observed during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) migration, or in wintering grounds (November-March).
This species undertakes long migrations, flying between its breeding grounds in temperate East Asia and its wintering grounds in tropical Southeast Asia.
